Victoria - Commisioner's message
Privacy Awareness Week 2008 - Privacy is your business
Privacy Awareness Week was first held in Victoria in 2002 to coincide with the anniversary of the commencement of the Information Privacy Act. The annual event aims to remind the public sector and the broader community of the importance of protecting privacy. The slogan being used to promote Privacy Awareness Week again this year is "Privacy is your business".
Privacy Awareness Week has been adopted by the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities. This includes all the Australian Commissioners and those from Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and South Korea.
The promotional material produced for this year's event focuses on 4 key Information Privacy Principles: IPP1 Collection, IPP2 Use and disclosure, IPP3 Data quality and IPP4 Data security.
These four IPPs are often the subject of privacy enquiries and complaints dealt with by this Office. By paying attention to the proper implementation of these IPPs in particular, Victorian public sector organisations are better placed to protect the privacy of their customers and staff and to minimise the risk of a data breach.
A program of free events for public sector staff can be found at http://www.privacy.vic.gov.au/ > events.
This Office is committed to supporting Victorian public sector organisations to effectively meet their privacy responsibilities. Please do not hesitate to call our Privacy Advice and Referral Line on 1300 666 444 or enquiries@privacy.vic.gov.au if you have any privacy related concerns. Details of our privacy training program can be found at http://www.privacy.vic.gov.au/ > training.
I ask that you give Privacy Awareness Week your full support.
HELEN VERSEY
