Australia - What you can do
Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Australia
1. Activities for promoting privacy among staff
All-staff email
Send an email at the beginning of Privacy Awareness Week to all staff explaining what the week is about and reminding staff of their privacy responsibilities. If possible, have your CEO or agency head send out this email as a way of showing your organisation's overall commitment to good privacy practice.
Upload the Privacy Awareness Week log-on screen / background
Ask your IT department to upload the Privacy Awareness Week log-on screen / background to your system so that all staff are reminded it's Privacy Awareness Week every time they log-on to their computer. View our promotional items page.
Put up Privacy Awareness Week posters
Put up our Privacy Awareness Week posters or develop your own! When you display the posters, consider adding your details to advertise your role as your organisation's privacy contact officer. Consider a display of posters and privacy materials on a table in your office's staff area. The Office has a limited supply of posters available. View our promotional items page.
Distribute the Privacy Principles bookmark to staff
The Privacy Act includes ten National Privacy Principles (NPPs) that private sector organisations must comply with, and 11 Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) that Australian and ACT Government agencies must comply with. The Office has a limited supply of privacy bookmarks with a simplified version of the NPPs on one side and the IPPs on the other. View our promotional items page.
Publish an article on your intranet
Consider publishing an article about privacy on your organisation's intranet. What are the privacy challenges that your organisation and staff members face? How can these challenges be met?
Hold a training/information session on privacy
This could be a detailed training session that you schedule for during the week, or perhaps just a simple information session outlining issues around collection or security of personal information.
Show Privacy Awareness Week video message
Download the Privacy Awareness Week video message from the Australian Privacy Commissioner, Karen Curtis, for training purposes, or upload it to your intranet. View/Download Commissioner's message
Run a privacy quiz
Run a quick privacy quiz in your team. See examples of privacy quizzes at http://www.privacy.gov.au/publications/index.html#Q
Use the Privacy Awareness Week logo
Hold a privacy movie screening
Invite staff to attend a screening of a movie or television episode with a privacy theme during a lunch hour.
Encourage compliance with a particular privacy principle
Privacy Awareness Week is an opportunity to encourage your organisation's staff to address a particular NPP or IPP. For example, get sections of your office to ensure that their databases are up-to-date (NPP3/IPP8).
Collaborate with other privacy contacts
Are there any other privacy compliance staff that you work closely with? Consider joining forces to coordinate promotional material or activities for your organisation.
2. Activities to promote your privacy policies and practices to your clients
Publish an article
Consider publishing an article about privacy in your organisation's newsletter or on its website. How does your organisation effectively address privacy challenges?
Develop a layered privacy notice
If your organisation doesn't yet have one, consider developing a layered privacy notice. This offers a condensed snapshot of the organisation's privacy policy and will enhance the ease with which people access and understand the policy. See the Office's layered notice at www.privacy.gov.au/policy/index.html.
Develop privacy FAQs
Consider developing some ‘Frequently Asked Questions' on your organisation's privacy policy and practices for placement on your website.
Use the Privacy Awareness Week logo
Think about launching significant new privacy documents this week
Have you developed privacy material, such as privacy FAQs or a new layered privacy policy? Consider launching them during Privacy Awareness Week.
Distribute the Privacy Principles bookmark to clients
